Stonehenge - a natural wonder and mystery!

Stonehenge is somewhere I have always wanted to visit as it is one of the best known prehistoric monuments in Europe.

Stonehenge consists of a ring of vertical Larsen standing stones, each around 13 feet high, seven feet wide and weighing about 25 tons. Some other interesting information about Stonehenge:

- It was built 5000 years ago

- It took 1000 years to build

- Scientists think the stones were a way to tell the time of year

- Nobody knows for sure how the stones were moved to Stonehenge.

A number of people travel to Stonehenge to watch the sunrise to celebrate the Summer and Winter Solstice.

There is still a lot of mystery and wonder about Stonehenge. In the 17th Century, archaeologist John Aubrey claimed Stonehenge was the work of Celtic high priests known as Druids or you can listen to folklore which says Stonehenge was created by Merlin (wizard of Arthurian legend), who magically transported the massive stones from Ireland where giants had assembled them. Another legend says invading Danes put them up, and another theory says they are the ruins of a Roman temple.

Whatever their story they are a great site to see!
